CHARITY - After hard work and lengthy preparation, the International Women’s Club’s (IWC) annual Winter Bizarre on November 26th raised over US$22,000 for local orphanages.

Held at the Astoria, with the cooperation of the major five-star hotels in the city, the Bazaar featured stalls of crafts, foodstuffs and gifts as well as dance performances and raffles.

Over nine hundred people attended. Odilia Hoeks de Ranitz, the IWC’s Charity Committee Chair, was thrilled with the success of the event. ‘It went really very well’, she said. ‘It was a record for our club. Last year we raised US$18,000… so next year our target is US$25,000 or even US$26,000. The aim is to ‘adopt’ three or four orphanages, restoring their poor facilities and equipping them to a good standard. Then we can really see the progress we are making.’

The IWC will also hold a charity cruise in June, and regular quiz and karaoke nights throughout the year.

GLASNOST - quotations

“You have to accept that Russia is a different co untry. I say, it’s like if Bush wants Iraq to be a democracy, that is total stupidity. Iraq will not be a democracy no matter what they do. Russia will not be a democracy in the way that you perceive a democracy either. (…) I always say that Russia is a perfect democracy for the informed. And total dictatorship for the uninformed.”
Derk Sauer, CEO Independent Media, one of the most successful publishers in Russia, interview in: Russian Investment Review
